The Rome Braves have been busy on and off the field.
The players, along with Romey, have had the opportunity to meet some of their
biggest fans here in the community.
We would like to say "thank-you" for all your support
and we hope to see you at State Mutual Stadium soon!
Throughout the season the Rome Braves have had the opportunity
to make financial contributions to some very admirable organizations.
Big Brothers Big Sisters, the most effective youth mentoring association
in America benefits from our Annual Hot Stove Gathering. On August 11th
the Braves were able to present Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rome and
Floyd County with a check of $6,500.
The first annual “Redneck Rummage Sale” was held at
State Mutual
Stadium in late July 2005. This very successful event brought in over 80
vendors into the stadium and a multitude of buyers. The proceeds from this
event benefited the William S. Davies Homeless Shelter.
The 1955 Cannon All-Stars were a group of African-American youngsters
who were not allowed to play in the Charleston City Playoffs because of a
boycott by white leagues. The boycott spread to the South Carolina State
Tournament in Greenville, SC and the Southeastern Regional Tournament
in Rome, GA. American Little League Baseball unanimously declared the
1955 Cannon Street YMCA All-Stars to be champions by forfeit in the
state and regional tournaments, but the team was not allowed to compete
for a National title in Williamsport, PA because the team had advanced
without playing on the field. The players are now grown men celebrating the
50th Anniversary of this historical event. The Rome Braves were honored to
have some of the gentleman with us for the August 15, 2005 game as they
traveled to Williamsport, PA where they will be recognized prior to the 2005
Little League World Series. The team was honored during a pre-game
introduction and they also thanked the Braves by presenting a replica of the
1955 South Carolina State Championship banner.
Boy Scout Night- On May 6th the Rome Braves partnered with
the
Northwest Georgia Boy Scout Council to host the first ever Boy Scout
Sleepover. After the game, roughly 400 Boy Scouts broke out the tents
and invaded Applebee’s Home Run Hill for the night. The boys
were
then treated to breakfast the next morning by the Rome Braves office staff.
We hope to make this an annual tradition for the Boy Scouts in our
community.
Habit For Humanity- The 2005 Rome Braves along with the Rome
Floyd County Habitat for Humanity, State Mutual Insurance Company
and Wheeler’s Lumber teamed up to bring one deserving family a new
home. On May 6th the entire 2005 Rome Braves team worked together
in raising the walls on the home. Other volunteer groups from the
community worked together on the project down the stretch as the home
gradually took shape.
Summer Reading Programs
Throughout the summer the Rome Braves players along with Romey
have visited the Cedartown, Rome, Cave Spring, and Rockmart
Libraries to help encourage kids to keep on reading.
Cattleman’s Association
It is true man cannot live on bread alone. For the second year in a row
the Cattleman’s Association has graciously feed both the Rome Braves
and the visiting teams a delicious steak dinner during the month of June
as a celebration of "Beef Month.".
