Braves Hold Off Catfish - Tanyon Sturtze to Rehab in Rome
Rome, GA – The Rome Braves came back for the second game in a row to
earn the 7-6 victory over the Columbus Catfish before a crowd of 2,746 at State
Mutual Stadium.
Columbus took the early 1-0 lead in the third inning on a Nevin Ashley RBI
single scoring Desmond Jennings who earlier reached on a walk. The Catfish would
tack on two more runs in the fourth highlighted by an RBI single by Craig Albernaz
and a sacrifice fly RBI by Jairo de la Rosa for the 3-0 lead.
The Braves took the lead for good with a huge seven run fifth inning. Larry
Williams singled to start the frame and Chad Lundahl reached on a fielder’s
choice followed by a walk to Yohan Silva to load the bases. Phillip Britton
singled scoring Williams and advancing the runners. Willie Cabrera followed
with a double scoring Lundahl and Silva tying the game 3-3. Tyler Flowers then
hit a three run blast (4) giving Rome the 6-3 advantage. The Braves would add
another run in the inning on an RBI double by Williams scoring Fontaine who
reached on a walk giving Rome the lead 7-3.
Rome’s pitching held off an offensive surge by the Catfish to claim the
7-6 win.
Jeff Lyman (4-8) is credited with the win for Rome while Brian Baker (2-3)
is tagged with the lost for the Catfish.
Sturtze Joins Rome Club: As part of a Major League Baseball rehabilitation
assignment, Atlanta Braves pitcher Tanyon Sturtze will start for the Rome Braves
Monday night versus Columbus. Sturtze, who joined the Atlanta club as a free
agent in December 2006, was placed on the 60 day disabled list on May 2nd. He
pitched for the New York Yankees in 2004 and 2005 and saw post season action
in the American League Division and League Championship Series.
