Braves Walk Off Against Sand Gnats

Rome, GA – The Rome Braves took game one of the three game set against the Savannah Sand Gnats in exciting fashion 6-5 Tuesday night in front of 2,904 fans at State Mutual Stadium. The win extended the Braves home winning streak against Savannah to eleven.

Savannah got on the board early in the second inning when Josh Thole walked, moved to second on a ground out, and scored on a Greg Veloz single to center for the 1-0 lead. Rome countered in their half of the inning when Ernesto Mejia and Yohan Silva walked to put runners on first and second. Concepcion Rodriguez then reached base on a fielding error by Veloz that scored Mejia. Robert Marcial followed with a single to left scoring Silva to take the lead 2-1.

In the sixth the Sand Gnats tied the game 2-2 when D. J. Wabick singled and scored on a Francisco Pena double to deep center field. The Braves wouldn’t take long to take the lead back when five walks by Savannah pitching led to two runs for the 4-2 score.

Savannah then scored in the seventh when Brandon Richey singled to reach base, advanced to second on an error, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Darren Clark’s single to pull within one run at 4-3. Clark then scored on a Wabick double to tied the score 4-4.

The Sand Gnats would take the lead in the ninth when Wabick walked, advanced on a singled, and scored on an error by Yohan Silva to make it 5-4. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth Rome came alive. Jon Mark Owings and Tyler Flowers reached on infield singles. Brandon Hicks then drew a walk to lead the bases. Ernesto Mejia then blasted a double over the left fielder’s head to score Owings and Flowers for the 6-5 victory.

Michael Mehlich earns his first win (1-0) in a Rome Braves uniform pitching the final two innings allowing one unearned run on two hits while striking out one and issuing one walk. David Koons is charged with the loss (1-6) pitching the final three innings allowing two runs on four hits issuing one walk and striking out two.
