Augusta Wins Afternoon Marathon
Rome, GA – The Augusta GreenJackets defeated the Rome Braves Wednesday
afternoon in front of 4,300 fans by a final score of 8-7 in a four hour thirty
seven minute afternoon affair at State Mutual Stadium.
The Braves and Greenjackets traded runs the first two innings. Augusta scored
three in the top half of the first highlighted by an RBI double by Garrett Baker
and an RBI single by Angel Villalona. Rome answered right back in the bottom
half of the inning to tie the game scoring on a fielding error, a ground out,
and an RBI single by Cody Johnson. The Braves and Greenjackets each scored two
runs in the second for the 5-5 deadlock.
Augusta took the lead 6-5 in the fourth on an RBI double by Angel Villalona.
Rome jumped ahead in the bottom of the fifth 7-6 thanks to a two run homer from
Freddie Freeman. Augusta would tie the contest 7-7 in the eighth. James Simmons
who came into the game as a pinch runner for Thomas Neal who singled earlier
in the inning, scored on a throwing error by catcher Javier Dominguez.
The Greenjackets took the lead in the thirteenth inning, 8-7, on a fielding
error by Cody Johnson scoring Brock Bond.
Daniel Turpen gets the win (2-1) and Benino Pruneda gets the loss (1-3) for
the Braves.
The Braves face the GreenJackets in the finale tomorrow evening at seven. It’s
