Greenville Drives Past Rome

Rome, GA – The Greenville Drive defeated the Rome Braves 4-2 Tuesday night at State Mutual Stadium in front of 2,854 fans. Rome dropped their second game in a row.

Greenville was first to get on the board when Carlos Fernandez scored on an RBI single by Jered Stanley in the first inning to make the score 1-0. Later in the inning Greenville’s Ryan Kalish collided with catcher Chris Anderson. Anderson was taken away in an ambulance with a moderate concussion. The very next inning, Braves catcher Benji Johson, who replaced Anderson, was injured by a foul tip and had to leave the game. Rome’s shortstop Chad Lundahl came in to relieve Johnson. Lundahl had not played as a catcher in his professional career with only occasional work in the bullpen.

Rome scored in the third inning to tie the game when Samuel Sime singled and later scored on a base hit by David Berres. The Drive took the lead for good in the fourth when Oscar Tajeda singled and scored on a wild pitch. Almanzar walked and crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice for the 3-1 score. In the fifth, Kalish doubled and scored on a ground out making the score 4-1. Rome scored a single run in the ninth but Greenville pitching held on for the 4-2 win.

Chad Povich (8-3) got the win for the Drive going seven innings with five strike outs. Matt Tims (0-1) took the loss for the Braves.
